a comprehensive timeline of shared twitter links
facts, figures, & forwards is a python-based web-scraping project intended to store useful and trending links shared on twitter, presenting them in a clear and meaningful manner
twitter’s extensive outreach as an information distribution platform has attracted over 330 million users. through incessant activity world-wide, the ever-growing social media/news conglomerate is home to trillions of tweets, providing opinions, information, and links on pressing global matters. we have set out to identify these tweets and extract links in an attempt to enhance the publicly available data on relevant issues. our algorithms focus on the top tweets for specific hashtags to ensure higher quality results.
our data is presented in a timeline format, separating links by their parent tweet’s posting date. this format concentrates on the development of issues in their longevity. for each individual date, the links are sorted by appearances on their respective hashtags, acting as a measure of activity and agreement on the link’s veritability. mentions are valued over likes in our algorithms as they require active participation in the spread of the link.
facts, figures & forwards currently only supports the #BlackLivesMatter hashtag as it is an imperative focal point in today’s society, however, the algorithms and code utilized to collect, parse, and present the data can be applied to any available hashtag. this system allows a similar stream of information to be replicated with any future social, cultural, or political issue, as well as any other imaginable topic with a used, contemporary twitter tag.
most links are presented without deliberate tampering as to ensure impartial data distribution
